While his pioneering former group has one of the most storied legacies in rap, Sermon has been making quality recordings of his own for some time, and if ever one of his solo albums deserved to be judged on its own merits, it's REACT. Throughout the album, Sermon drops his visceral, streetwise raps over a sonic framework full of funk, R&B grooves, and cutting-edge beats. Although everyone from original soul man Al Green to neo-soul superstar Angie Stone turns up for a guest appearance, it's Sermon's own powerful style that sets the tone and makes REACT elicit such a positive reaction.
