Jim ORourke Tamper
Jim ORourke Tamper
Re-issued in 2008, Jim O'Rourke's early three-song album, TAMPER, has come to be regarded as one of his finest. It is certainly exemplary of his early work's balance of electro-acoustic explorations with more traditional indie-rock structures, as well as of an oeuvre that helped define the dubious moniker "post-rock." TAMPER (1991) finds O'Rourke processing and manipulating traditional instruments to the point where they're almost entirely unrecognizable. It's a pleasant, calming record for the most part, though for discerning ears it becomes quite challenging if one were to try to guess the origin of each sound. TAMPER foreshadows the ground that O'Rourke would explore later in his career in his solo output as well as in Gastr Del Sol and Sonic Youth. Not as alienating as some of his work, this early album stands as a solid introduction to the composer's hefty catalog.
