A volume on Tyrone Davis titled Super Hits doesn't deserve the name when it neglects "Can I Change My Mind" and "Turn Back the Hands of Time." Still, selected moments on this brief compilation of his Columbia years (1976-1980) prove that Davis had plenty of soul, even during the days of disco. The Chicago kingpin delivered plenty of his trademarked aching soul on "Give It Up (Turn It Loose)" and the title track of his 1977 LP, Let's Be Closer Together, and coped with up-tempo groovers on the elegant "Get on Up (Disco)." His version of Marvin Gaye's Motown standard "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved You)" is a little flat, but for the most part Davis kept to a high level of quality during the late '70s. Columbia compiled this period very well on the 15-track set The Best of Tyrone Davis: In the Mood, but in a pinch Super Hits may also deliver what listeners are after. ~ John Bush
