Was the Blues Project a modern blues band like Paul Butterfield, a folk-rock oufit, or some other exotic psychedelic hybrid, with their smattering of jazz and baroque classical styles? Since the band itself was a good one, and virtuoso guitarist Danny Kalb a great musician, their eclecticism has worn well, as evidenced on their second and best album, 1966 's PROJECTIONS. Founding member Al Kooper had his hand in many projects of course; this classic album was a prelude to the successful Blood, Sweat & Tears and that ubiquitous FM staple, SUPER SESSION. Still, Kooper reached an early peak here with his signature "I Can't Keep From Crying," a hard folk-rocking version of Bob Lind's "Cheryl's Going Home," and "Flute Thing," a better breed of jazz-rock than B,S &T ever was.
