The Dead Sea Scrolls of early '60s punk? This astonishing two disc set--most of which has been sitting, unheard, in the Columbia Records vaults since the Johnson administration--consists in part of outtakes, early singles, and album sides. The bulk of the package, however, is made up of an extremely well-recorded live-in-the-studio concert set performed in front of an enthusiastic audience of high school kids in late '64.
The Raiders bulldoze their way through the R&B hits of the period with seemingly telepathic interplay, showmanship (guitarist Drake Levin plays a guitar solo behind his head on "Whole Lotta Nothin'"--take that, Jimi Hendrix!), and utter wanton disrespect for the canons of good taste. A priceless document of the last innocent period in rock history, this is in essence a real-life version of the Toga Party scene in ANIMAL HOUSE.
