Procol Harum's debut album contains all of the group's trademarks to full effect. The band combined R&B with a classically tinged two-keyboard approach, and, in Gary Brooker, had a singer of rich and soulful passion. Procol Harum's first album was released a few months after the band's enormous hit "A Whiter Shade of Pale" captured the attention of large portions of the world. However, that song was not included on the original PROCOL HARUM.
PROCOL HARUM... PLUS includes the band's breakthrough track as well as nine other bonus cuts. The poetic imagery of lyricist Keith Reid provides the band with words that perfectly fit the amalgam of moods the instrumentalists capture. The band's third single, "Conquistador," opens this set, while their second single, "Homburg," is included as a bonus track. This collection is laden with treasures, including the punchy "A Christmas Camel."
