ADDICTIONS gathers a goodly chunk of indispensable singles and outstanding album cuts from Robert Palmer's Island Records tenure in the '70s and '80s, as well as his last smash, "Simply Irresistible," and Power Station's "Some Like it Hot." The set balances some of the biggest hits with songs that are less familiar but no less compelling. People who caught up with Palmer in the '80s will appreciate early tunes like the stellar "Every Kinda People."
A number of songs have seen some post-production polishing, but still remain sonically faithful to the originals, though a radically reworked version of the tricky "Woke Up Laughing" emphasizes a wholly new rhythm scheme. Sandwiched between hits like a remixed "Bad Case of Loving You" and Palmer's Number One smash, "Addicted to Love" is the hypnotic title track from "Pride," which demonstrates the singer's facility with African rhythms.
