Discovered by Boyz II Men's Stonecreek Productions, Detroit native Uncle Sam carries on proudly in that group's tradition of musical excellence. On his self-titled debut, he keeps his heart in the smooth soul of yesteryear, with an eye on the funkier, harder-edged sounds of today's R&B. A first rate belter, Uncle Sam's music is romantic and powerful; the album's production, overseen by Boyz II Men themselves, turns this gift into slick, well-crafted pop.
The album's opener, "Can You Feel It?" features a rap by Popa Chief followed by an impressive display of Sam's gift for soul. "You Make Me Feel Like" uses Sam's confident vocals and sexy lyrics to build on a sampled Stanley Clarke riff. Sam continues to show off his staggering vocal prowess on "Stop Foolin' Around," skillfully dipping in and out of his strong falsetto and flaunting the combination of admirable skill and strong emotional commitment which makes UNCLE SAM a powerful, important example of the future of R&B.
